What I liked

I really enjoyed the friendliness and helpfulness of everyone at Emerson. I was never afraid to ask questions or ask for help when needed. Additionally, I felt that my team gave me a significant amount of responsibility and meaningful projects.

What I wish was different

I wish I had spent my second or third term in a different branch of engineering. Seeing how Quality or Advanced Manufacturing works would have been a valuable experience and widened my scope of knowledge.

Advice

I would recommend to anyone doing a co-op term to ask questions. Everyone at Emerson was very friendly and was more than willing to take the time to make sure I understood how something worked. I would also advise to build on the connections made and reach out when job searching.

Advanced Manufacturing Engineer Co-op

May - August 2018 • Sidney, OH

What I liked

The AME team is full of awesome people that are easy going but also there to teach you things along the way. In this group, I was able to get myself outside my comfort zone and picked up a few new skills along the way like welding, vision programming, and design work.

What I wish was different

It would have been nice to travel with some of the team to other plants.

Advice

Ask as many questions as possible. Everyone in the department is willing to teach you but you have to seek out the opportunity.

Integrated Product Department Co-op

August 2018 • Sidney, OH

What I liked

I enjoy the diversity of projects I work on. I get a unique view of products as they are being developed and preparing to be manufactured. I also enjoy the range of work I have, I get to do hands on projects but also see the paperwork it takes to turn an idea into reality.

What I wish was different

Advice

Working on so many different projects you really learn the importance of asking questions. My advice is to future co-ops is ask as many questions as you can, and learn as much as possible from your coworkers.

AC Marketing Co-op

January - August 2018 • Sidney, OH

What I liked

I loved the environment I worked in and all of my coworkers. Everyone was very friendly and always willing to help me with any questions I had. I also felt that I was given projects that were meaningful and beneficial to my experience.

What I wish was different

I wish that I would have done a plant tour and some other informational tours about the company earlier in my term.

Advice

I would suggest to be proactive about projects. If you felt your workload was light, don't be afraid to ask for more. Don't just wait on your manager to give you projects if you have the time to take on more.

Chemical Engineering Co-op

August 2017 • Sidney, OH

What I liked

Almost the entirety of my work is hands-on which appeals to my interests greatly. I get to use a lot of high-tech equipment and measurement devices that many other labs do not have.

What I wish was different

I want to do more data analysis rather than just taking the measurements and letting someone else do the work from there.

Electrical Design Engineer Co-op

May 2017 • Shakopee, MN

What I liked

I think a unique aspect to this program is the opportunity to work in different roles within the company. It is very helpful when deciding what you want to do when you graduate to have experience in different aspects of engineering.

What I wish was different

I wish there were more part time or remotely based opportunities for co-ops to continue working during the school year.

Advice

I would strongly encourage co-ops to reach out to as many people in the company that they can. Everyone is willing to share their own experiences and work at Emerson, and this will provide an avenue to learn about the company as a whole
