Media Center Development Intern

May - September 2019 • Rochester Hills, MI

What I liked

Relaxed schedule, the professors I worked with were approachable and available for contact when needed. Working alone provided an opportunity for personal growth, I made my own schedule and reported back when I had made ample progress on my objective.

What I wish was different

Felt alone at times, my work space was a computer lab so some weeks I would come in and leave with very little interaction apart from emails (later worked in Oakland center). Had an uncomfortable altercation with one of the professors early on, but this served as a growing opportunity on respect and communication that benefited me in the long run.

Advice

Make goals for yourself, there is endless value in learning to be self-reliant. Being proactive might mean making a few mistakes, but you don't learn if you don't try.

Biology Laboratory Assistant

May - August 2018 • Rochester, MI

What I liked

I really liked my supervisor, Dr. Thomas Raffel. I also really enjoyed the research topics we were exploring for the summer.

What I wish was different

I wish that there was a bit more organization. Sometimes that's hard to come by in the sciences though, especially when experiments don't go to plan and you have to regroup and come up with a plan B.

Advice

Get involved in undergraduate research as early as possible! It's an awesome opportunity, looks great on a resume, and gives you real-world experience in your eventual field!

Orientation Group Leader

May - August 2018 • Rochester, MI

What I liked

I absolutely loved working with the incoming freshman and getting them acclimated to the college life, they were so enthusiastic about learning what Oakland University is all about. The Orientation days were packed full of fun and knowledge gaining. That job has been the best part of any summer I've had!

What I wish was different

Something that could've been different is probably the structure of the day, instead of having half the students do one thing and half the other, it would be nice to have them all do it at the same time.

Advice

One thing I would say is, share your own experiences as much as you can, because it let's the incoming freshman know that there is never a dull moment at Oakland University!
