Student Video Editor & Communications Assistant (FWS)
Position Overview
This opportunity is for eligible Federal Work Study program students only.
We are seeking a motivated and creative Student Video Editor & Communications Assistant to help tell RITA’s story through engaging video content and to provide general support to the Digital Communications team. The ideal candidate will assist in editing videos for social media and our website, contribute to the creation of a “capabilities reel,” and help with day-to-day departmental needs. Experience in filming, motion design, or other creative media is a plus but not required.
Key Responsibilities
- Edit short-form videos (30 sec to 3 min) for social media (LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube, etc.)
- Assist in creating a capabilities reel highlighting RITA’s mission, research areas, and impact.
- Help manage video assets and organize footage
- Support filming of interviews, lab activities, and events (if available)
- Assist with motion graphics or animations (if skills allow)
- Provide general administrative and creative support, including:
- Assisting department heads with project needs
- Helping prepare presentations, documents, or marketing materials
- Supporting event setup, photography, or note-taking
- Maintaining organized digital files and archives
Qualifications
- Current Howard University student (undergraduate or graduate)
- Due to U.S. Export Control laws and regulations, the candidate hired will need to be a U.S. citizen.
- Interest in media production, storytelling, and communications
- Proficiency in at least one video editing tool, such as:
- Adobe Premiere Pro (preferred) or similar software (Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve)
- Familiarity with Adobe After Effects, Photoshop, or Illustrator is a plus
- Basic knowledge of social media video formats and specs
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively
- Willingness to assist with general office tasks and special projects
Nice-to-Have Skills
- Camera operation (DSLR or mirrorless)
- Motion graphics or animation
- Photography and basic photo editing
- Experience working in a research, academic, or STEM environment
