Position Summary

This Recreation Specialty Instructor (RSI) will serve as the head coach for introductory youth soccer programs. In partnership with staff at the recreation center or playground, coaches will lead children in recreational soccer with the goal is for every child to have fun, make friends, and develop new skills to help them thrive. Coaches should be enthusiastic about sports and working with young people. They should be able to effectively communicate with key stakeholders including children, parents, other coaches, and Parks & Rec staff. They should be energetic on the field and dedicated to supporting social and emotional growth in their players.

This role includes training in Soccer For Success, Intramural Refereeing, and Positive Youth Development. There is the opportunity for US Soccer Grassroots Coach certification. Coaches should have a general background in soccer with advanced experience preferred. Coaches do not need to have coached before but must be enthusiastic about working with young people in sport. Selected candidates will be required to demonstrate teaching/coaching ability in an interview.

Responsibilities

 Coach young people in sport, emphasizing fun and inclusive play

 Lead demonstrations, drills, games, and other activities

 Ensure a safe environment where everyone can play and have fun

 Manage the flow of activities to ensure participation of all youth

 Assist with logistics around arrival, setup, breakdown, and departure

 Be aware of participants’ unique needs and how to best instruct each individual child

 Where appropriate, manage less experienced coaches and design program plans

 Other duties as assigned

Requirements & Qualifications

 Must be skilled and interested in working with children

 Completion of forms for PA State Police Criminal background, PA Department of Public Welfare Childline and FBI clearance. Do not send in for clearances. Must submit through the Parks & Recreation Department

 Successful candidates must be a city of Philadelphia resident as a condition of employment.

 Must be 18+

 Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds of weight

 Must be able to spend long periods of time standing

 Must be able to walk/run/move for extended periods of time

 Must have experience with and interest in sports and/or coaching young people
