New employees are generally hired at the starting salary and may be eligible for merit increases each year upon receipt of a satisfactory performance evaluation, up to the maximum salary.

JOB DESCRIPTION

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:  Performs skilled mechanical work in the operation, maintenance and repair of specialized machinery in wastewater pumping stations; does related work as required.
 
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:  An employee in this class inspects, repairs, operates, maintains and installs wastewater pumping stations and treatment facilities performing a variety of mechanical work assignments.  This employee works under general supervision, but exercises considerable independent judgment in executing assignments.
 
EXAMPLES OF WORK:  (Illustrative Only)

  • Makes mechanical repairs to and operates engines, pumps, valves, electrical and pneumatic controls, and compressors;
  • Performs repairs on electric motors used for water and wastewater systems;
  • Uses hand, bench, and machine tools, including lathes and milling machines, cutting tools and precision measuring devices in the repair and maintenance of pumps, meters, valves, and other pump station and treatment plant infrastructure, machinery, and equipment;
  • Lubricates pumps, motors, and other moving parts according to a prescribed schedule;
  • Ascends or descends ladders or scaffolds to enter confined spaces or work at heights;
  • Performs daily inspection of stations for maintenance, operational and safety compliance and corrects deficiencies.
  • Picks up charts and records operating data for review by an engineer;
  • Keeps station and adjacent ground in clean and orderly condition;
  • Supervises, trains, and instructs assigned helpers/other subordinates in operation and maintenance of mechanical equipment;
  • Promotes an ongoing attitude of dedication to excellent public service and ensures that internal and external customers are provided with the highest quality of service;
  • Operates a personal computer and other related equipment in the course of the work. 

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:  Good knowledge of the standard practices, methods, tools, and materials of the electrical and mechanical trades; good knowledge of machine work and related mechanical trades operations; knowledge of pump hydraulics; thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards connected with general maintenance operations and ability to observe and enforce appropriate safety precautions; Ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE), including a personal fall arrest system as required by job tasks and exposure to hazards; ability to lift 50-100+ lbs. occasionally; able to ascend and descend truck and vehicles steps, ladders and scaffolds safely.  Ability to enter and exit a confined space safely; ability to hold, pinch, grip and grasp hand and power tools as necessary; skill in the use and care of bench and hand tools, machines and equipment of the mechanical trades; ability to understand and carry out difficult oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers; ability to troubleshoot pumping systems.
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: At least three (3) years of experience in mechanical maintenance work involving plumbing, mechanical, and electrical repairs and installations, including at least one (1) year of experience in the maintenance of industrial plants, and possession of a high school or trade/vocational school diploma or GED, including or supplemented by courses in the mechanical trades; or an equivalent combination of experience, education or training directly related to the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
 
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:  Possession of a valid Delaware Class D driver's license or its equivalent.  Must pass a Class II County physical examination and background check.
