Laboratory Research Assistant at Dr. Gao's Lab in College of Medicine, Dept. of Physiology & Biophysics (FWS)
The laboratory is focused on mitochondria mediated mechanisms responsible for the development of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and long-term impacts of GDM on maternal and offspring health (type 2 diabetes, hypertension and heart disease), and potential roles of mitochondria in HIV infection, prevention and treatment in pregnant women. The selected students may participate in biochemical, molecular, cellular, physiological experiments, microscopic imaging, multi-omics analysis and mouse studies.
Prospective candidates must have Federal Work Study Awards
Hours:
- 5-20 hours per week, semi-flexible
- Occasional evening or weekend hours for experimental procedures, if needed
Essential functions:
- Laboratory maintenance (cleaning glassware and utensils, stocking and organization, etc.)
- Laboratory solutions and reagents preparation
- Assisting in and/or conducting laboratory experiments
- Laboratory data entry and basic analysis
- Ordering, retrieving and documenting lab supplies
- Preparing and maintaining laboratory protocols/procedure books
Required (or preferred) skills, traits and knowledge:
- Self-motivated and teachable
- Pursuing a career in biomedical research
- Basic Biology and Chemistry knowledge
- Laboratory math skills (molarity, concentrations, dilutions, etc.)
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Organizational skills
- Reliable and responsible
- Good teamwork and communication skills
- Must have Federal Works Study Awards (FWS)
