Nationwide

Technology Intern

May - August 2023 • Columbus, OH

What I liked

I loved the team that I worked with. Everyone was incredibly kind and supportive, and encouraged me to dig deeper into my learning and reach out for questions. It was fairly easy to network with people in different areas.

What I wish was different

I think it would have been nice to do some sort of rotation, such as working on one project/team/role in one half and one in the other half. Or maybe have more opportunities to shadow people in different roles and get to see what their work was like day-to-day.

Advice

I would advise future interns to not get comfortable in their own work or project, but to branch out and meet as many people as possible, especially since it is mostly a remote experience.

Nationwide Brokerage Soluions Intern

May 2023 • Columbus, OH

What I liked

The Nationwide culture is truly what everyone says it is. Everyone is very welcoming and eager to provide assistance / field questions when needed.

What I wish was different

The only issue I had was it was a remote internship and would've liked it to be more hybrid. Had the option of coming in if I wanted to, but none of my team was in-office.

Advice

Network, network, network. This is the best opportunity to get yourself in front of as many senior leaders as you can.

Technology Summer Internship

May - August 2022 • Columbus, OH

What I liked

Nationwide is a fantastic company to work for. The culture is so supportive. Everyone just wants you to learn and start contributing in any way you can. Not to mention the technology internship was so diverse which is something you don't see too often in technology. After my internship ended, they even gave me the option to keep working part time throughout the school year. I took that option and it was very flexible. My manager understood that classes are a students first priority. I highly recommend Nationwide as a place for an internship and a career.

Quality Engineer

May - August 2022 • Columbus, OH

What I liked

I enjoyed the interaction with other interns. I also enjoyed the opportunities to interact with employees of nationwide and understand what their roles are in the company. My favorite experience overall was the in-person week. Not only was it fun to spend time with other interns, but I enjoyed being able to physically simulate what it would be like to work a 9-5 in the workplace.

What I wish was different

I wish that we were able to spend half of the summer in-person and the other half virtual, instead of only spending one week out of 12 in-person. It was very fun to interact with interns in-person, I wish we had more time together in Columbus.

Advice

Don't be afraid to speak up, if you need help. Take every opportunity you can and put your best effort forward.

Actuarial Intern

May - August 2021 • Des Moines, IA

What I liked

I really liked how I was able to actively listen and participate in meetings (introducing inters with other interns, team huddles, job shadows, meetings with associates). I improved my technical skills, and the support for my learning was always there; I also gained some useful knowledge on insurance and its resources and products.

What I wish was different

I wish I was assigned a big project at the conclusion of training, as opposed to performing many smaller tasks and having a medium sized project assigned midway.

Advice

It's perfectly fine to work on things slowly, and to focus more on how things work rather than solely making a process work.

What I liked

I liked that we had wonderful mentors and plenty of guidance even though the internship was shortened.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship was longer, even though it was virtual.

Advice

Definitely try to network with as many people as you can, step outside of your comfort zone! Build meaningful relationships with your mentors and colleagues.

I.T Application Developer

May - August 2019 • Columbus, OH

What I liked

I really enjoyed my whole experience at nationwide. I was stationed downtown with plenty of other interns and this space was provided by nationwide, since I lived to far away. Parking was free, and the living space was pretty nice. It was a 10-15 minute walk everyday for work. I also enjoyed working with my team, and I'm glad i am able to go back next summer!

What I wish was different

I wish didn't program in webfocus, and I saved all my money! But there was all kinds of different languages you could work with as a intern.

Advice

Don't be afraid, and be open to doing things on the side such as networking, and possible shadowing in areas that you aren't messing up during your internship

Finance Data Governance Intern

May - December 2019 • Columbus, OH

What I liked

The environment at Nationwide is one of prosperity, innovation, and learning. I, sincerely, enjoyed every minute of this experience and learned more than I could have ever anticipated.

What I wish was different

Due to the ever changing environment at Nationwide, associates change positions very frequently, normally every 18 months or 2 years. This is amazing and ensure continuous learning; however, due to this my manger/person I reported changed 5 times within a few months. This made it difficult to predict the future and although flexibility is important, this may have been too much.

Advice

This isn't a traditional accounting internship; however, I took this internship over other offers because it gave me behind-the-scenes insight of the accounting world and the experience was complementary to the knowledge taught in college courses. I think it is very important to go outside your limits and try new things. You never know what you like until after you have tried it and it is just as important to know what you want to do as it is to know what you don't want to do.

Performance Engineering Intern

May - August 2018 • Columbus, OH

What I liked

The culture of the company, the people, and the organization of the intern program.

What I wish was different

Returning interns received treatment as if they were new interns / didn't have experience there already. (the program was getting revamped so not entirely their fault)

Advice

If you want more, ask for it. You will most likely get it. Nationwide really cares about the growth of their interns so make it an experience you want.
